This African Mask from the Babanki people of Cameroon measures 52 inches tall and 11 inches wide. The elephant is a royal animal in Babanki tradition and these masks may be worn only by privileged members of the community on special occasions such as dances, festivals, and funerals. Dancers wearing elephant masks move slowly, majestically, with dignity, imitating the elephant. The elephant mask is second in prestige only to the human mask.
