This African statuette from the Senufo people is 28 inches tall, and hand-carved of wood. It is a maternity figure, the mother cradling her infant protectively in her arms. The piece has a wonderfully aged patina, and her beautiful hair style means that she is most likely a wealthy woman. In Africa, an intricate hair style connotes wealthy woman, demonstrating that the wearer does not have to carry cargo on her head.
