African art and masks of the Punu. This African mask from the Punu People of Cameroon is 12 inches tall, and 7 inches wide. Punu folklore assigns anti-witchcraft powers to the color white; thus many punu masks have distinctively beautiful white faces. 

Punu masks with their white faces, elegant hair styles, and generally closed eyes are unique in African art. They share a strong resemblance with some Japanese art. But there has never been any significant interchange between these two societies and so the similarities are purely coincidental.
