African Stools - Dogon Primordial Stool African art and masks of the Dogon. Dogon mythology maintains that one couple begat the entire world. That "Primordial Couple" is traditionally represented in art and sculpture as sitting together on a stool or, as in this case, incorporated into the stool itself. The base of the stool represents the earth, and the seat represents the sky signifying the couple's dominion over all of heaven and Earth. The generally oval heads; the exaggerated and pointed female breasts (evident on the seat view below); the extremely squared shoulders and parallel arms: all are distinctive of Dogon sculpture. This stool is 32 inches from head to head, and the seat is 12 inches wide.
